Vacuum regularly to reduce dust accumulation. New rugs should air out before placing in living spaces. Natural fiber rugs (wool, cotton, jute) can be spot-cleaned with mild soap and water. Rug pads should be natural rubber or felt, not PVC.
"Natural fiber" rugs may still have synthetic latex backing or stain treatments. "Washable" rugs solve maintenance but check what the backing is made of. "Hand-woven" says nothing about dyes or treatments used.
